UK Day 9 - Snowdon

Snowdon from Glaslyn

Emma and I hiked to the top of Snowdon from the Clogwyn stop on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. The railway was closed from Clogwyn to the summit.  Then we hiked down the Miner's Track to Pen-y-Pass.  The route was intense for all but the last mile or so beginning with a very steep climb followed by a very rough and rocky trail.  Beautiful though.  Lots of spectacular views.

Snowdon is amazing when you compare it to Marys Peak, near where I live.  Marys Peak is 500+ feet higher, but they are VERY different.  Where Marys Peak is a warm and fuzzy forest peak in the Coast Range of Oregon that doesn't seem very tall, Snowdon is a desolate, rocky, and exposed peak near the coast of Wales.  I've hiked both.  Not the same.

The rack for the rack and pinion rail line up to Snowdon.

View toward the NNW while riding the train up Snowdon.

The engine that got us there.

The beginning of the trail from Clogwyn to the summit.

This is how steep the trail was.  No switchbacks.

The summit waiting line.

A view toward the east from the summit.

My hiking buddy, Emma, at the summit.

Me at the summit.  I guess this is evidence that I was there.

The beginning of the Miner's Track down the mountain.  The lakes are Glaslyn and Llyn Llydaw.

Another view toward the east.

An old mining establishment beside Llyn Llydaw.

Looking back toward Snowdon across Llyn Llydaw.

Sheep, ... er, goat of the day.

Pen-y-Pass and the end of the hike.
