Identity

I recommend the book ...

Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment by Francis Fukuyama

In fact,  I'll even elevate it to the status of Lonnie's Core Educational Books that everyone should read.

This book is written the context of the unexpected results of the 2016 U.S.  presidential election when so many people seemed to have voted against their own interests.  It explores the notion of identity and self-worth, particularly in groups.  Essentially tribalism.  He shows how the satisfaction of this need can trump, so to speak, what we normally consider to be utility needs (survival).  This is a good elaboration on the things that you can learn from Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow (also a part of Lonnie's Core Educational Books).

A key insight for me is that these behaviors aren't necessarily irrational, they are just performed in a different value framework.  In this case, respect and self-worth.  Since it's abstract this system is fairly easy to manipulate in some at the expense of other values.  The people who do that are slimy and my opinion of them remains unchanged.  It is though a key factor in value generation.  None of this is new, of course.  This book does a particularly good job of spelling it out.
